Makinde Hails Tinubu, Security Agencies as Abducted Oyo Pupils, Teachers Regain Freedom After 56 Days

Former member of the House of Representatives and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Rotimi Makinde, has applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, security agencies, and the Oyo State Government for their collaborative efforts that led to the successful rescue of abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Makinde described the operation, which culminated in the release of the victims after 56 days in captivity, as a major milestone in Nigeria’s fight against insecurity and a strong indication that coordinated security strategies can yield meaningful results.

The rescue operation, announced by the Presidency on July 10, 2026, brought an end to weeks of anxiety and uncertainty for families, communities, and stakeholders following the abduction of students and teachers from schools in the Ogbomoso axis of the state.

Reacting to the development in a statement made available to journalists on Monday, Makinde said the successful rescue was not only a source of relief for the victims and their loved ones but also a significant boost to public confidence in the nation’s security institutions.

According to him, the achievement demonstrated the effectiveness of cooperation between federal and state authorities in addressing security challenges and sends a clear signal to criminal elements that acts of terror and kidnapping will not be tolerated in Nigeria.

“I sincerely commend the efforts of the Federal Government, the security agencies, and the people and government of Oyo State for this major breakthrough in securing the release of the abducted students and their teachers, who were held captive by violent terrorists for over 56 days,” he stated.

Makinde noted that the operation reflected the determination of the Tinubu administration and the commitment of security agencies to protecting lives and restoring public safety, especially in vulnerable sectors such as education.

While celebrating the release of the abductees, the former lawmaker expressed deep sadness over the death of Mr. Michael Oyedokun, a mathematics teacher who reportedly died while in captivity.

He described the late teacher’s death as a painful tragedy that highlighted the dangers faced by educators and students amid growing security concerns across the country.

“His death remains a painful reminder of the urgent need to safeguard our schools. Yet today, to the glory of God, the narrative has changed. I congratulate the Nigeria Union of Teachers on this hard-won victory and commend their patience, patriotism, and solidarity with their colleagues during this difficult time,” Makinde said.

The death of the teacher had triggered widespread condemnation and heightened concerns over the safety of educational institutions, prompting the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) to embark on an indefinite strike in protest against insecurity in schools.

Makinde acknowledged the emotional trauma endured by parents, families, government officials, and the affected communities during the prolonged captivity of the victims. He also praised Nigerians for their prayers, support, and resilience throughout the crisis.

According to him, the successful outcome of the rescue mission was the result of sustained efforts, strategic engagement, and the unwavering commitment of all stakeholders involved in securing the victims’ freedom.

The APC stalwart, however, urged authorities not to become complacent, stressing the need for sustained action against insecurity across the country.

He called for improved intelligence gathering, stronger community-based security networks, and enhanced collaboration among security agencies to prevent future incidents of abduction and violence.

Makinde further advocated greater investment in school security infrastructure and policies aimed at protecting students, teachers, and other vulnerable groups nationwide.

“On the strength of this major breakthrough, I make a passionate appeal to the Government not to relent in stemming the tide of insecurity across every corner of our beloved country. Once again, I congratulate all Nigerians on this good news, and most importantly, I celebrate the abductees who came out alive and will soon reunite with their families,” he added.

Observers say the successful rescue has renewed hope among citizens that persistent security challenges can be effectively tackled through coordinated efforts between governments, security agencies, communities, and other stakeholders.
