WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY: OGWAMA Managing Director, Alhaji Farouk Akintunde, Urges Ogun Residents to Embrace Proper Waste Disposal

As the world commemorates this year's World Environment Day, The Managing Director/CEO of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), Special Adviser to Prince Dapo Abiodun CON Alhaji Farouk Akintunde, has called on residents of Ogun State to adopt responsible waste disposal practices in order to promote a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment.

Speaking in a statement issued to mark the annual global event, Alhaji Akintunde emphasized the importance of environmental cleanliness and collective responsibility in addressing the growing challenge of indiscriminate waste disposal across communities in the state.

The OGWAMA Chairman noted that improper dumping of refuse remains one of the major causes of environmental pollution, blocked drainage systems, flooding and the spread of diseases. He stressed that maintaining a clean environment is not solely the responsibility of government agencies but a duty that must be shared by every citizen.

According to him, World Environment Day serves as a reminder of the need to protect natural resources and preserve the environment for future generations.

"Environmental sustainability begins with simple actions such as disposing of waste appropriately. I urge all residents of Ogun State to desist from dumping refuse on roadsides, drainage channels, open spaces and other unauthorized locations. Let us cultivate the habit of keeping our surroundings clean and healthy," he said.

Akintunde commended Governor Dapo Abiodun's administration for its unwavering commitment to environmental sanitation and waste management reforms aimed at enhancing the quality of life of residents across the state.

He further disclosed that OGWAMA has intensified public enlightenment campaigns and strengthened partnerships with waste management operators to ensure efficient refuse collection and disposal throughout the state.

The chairman encouraged residents to patronize approved waste collectors and make use of designated waste disposal facilities provided by relevant authorities. He also called on community leaders, market associations, religious organizations and youth groups to support environmental awareness initiatives within their respective communities.

Highlighting the significance of this year's World Environment Day theme, Akintunde said environmental protection requires deliberate actions from individuals, institutions and governments alike.

He warned that environmental degradation poses serious threats to public health, economic development and social well-being, adding that proactive measures must be taken to safeguard the ecosystem.

"Together, we can build a cleaner and greener Ogun State. Every properly disposed waste contributes to a healthier environment and a better future for all," he stated.

World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5, is a United Nations-led initiative designed to encourage global awareness and action for the protection of the environment. The occasion brings together governments, organizations, communities and individuals to promote sustainable environmental practices and address pressing ecological challenges.

As activities marking the day continue worldwide, residents of Ogun State have been urged to play their part by embracing environmental responsibility and supporting efforts aimed at creating cleaner and safer communities.
